Developmental change of vowel production in Cantonese children
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper investigates the developmental change in formant frequencies (F1F2) of the vowels [i u ɛ ɔ a] in Cantonese male and female children of the ages ranging from 4 to 12. Results show that (i) a decrease in formant frequencies and vowel loop area is a function of age and the change is a gradual process; (ii) the developmental change with age is non-uniform across vowel types and formants, with a larger decrease in F1 for the mid and low vowels [ɛ ɔ a] than the high vowels [i u] and a smaller decrease in F2 for the rounded back vowels [u ɔ] than the unrounded front equivalents [i ɛ] and the low vowel [a]; (iii) the difference in vowel formant frequencies between male and female children starts at 7 years of age and peaks at 12 years of age; and (iv) the difference in vowel loop area between male and female children as a function of age is not significant.

Temporal Organization of Syllable Production in the Speech of Cantonese-speaking Children
The paper investigates the temporal structures of three types of syllables, CV:, CVN, and CVV (C = [p ph ts tsh s], V: = [aː], VN = [an], VV = [ai]), in Cantonese. Results of a temporal analysis of the speech samples from two 9to 10-year-old Cantonese-speaking children are as follows. First, the durations of the syllable-initial consonants and the following rime are not negatively correlated, a...
متن کاملEffect of Language Experience on the Categorical Perception of Cantonese Vowel Duration
This study investigated the effect of language experience on the categorical perception of Cantonese vowel duration distinction. By comparing Cantonese and Mandarin listeners’ performances, we found that: (1) duration change elicited categorical perception in the performance of Cantonese listeners, but not in Mandarin listeners; (2) Cantonese listeners were affected by the vowel quality differe...

The present study investigated how the vowel system of the first language (Cantonese) affects the acquisition of vowels of a second language. Forty native Cantonese-speaking adults (20 males and 20 females), with ages between 19 years 4 months and 26 years 10 months were recruited. Data from the first and second formant frequencies indicated that, for both female and male speakers, production o...

متن کاملInconsistent Consonantal Effects on F0 in Cantonese and Mandarin
Previous research shows that aspiration and sonorancy can have inconsistent consonantal effects on vowel F0 across languages, and even within the same language in different studies: they are reported to either lower F0, raise F0, or have neutral effects. This paper is interested in such inconsistent consonantal effects on vowel F0 in Cantonese and Mandarin. The results of a series of production...
